Exploring the UNESCO Site: The Elephant Rock

Northern Sardinia is home to unique and evocative landscapes, where nature intertwines with the island’s ancient history. Among the must-see stops during a stay at Hotel Relax Torreruja in Isola Rossa is the famous Elephant Rock of Castelsardo, officially included—together with 16 other Sardinian sites—on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 12 July 2025.

Overlooking the panoramic road that leads to the medieval village of Castelsardo, around 30 minutes by car from the hotel, the rock owes its name to its extraordinary resemblance to a crouching elephant. It is a large block of trachyte, with its characteristic rusty-red hue, shaped over the centuries by wind erosion and the forces of nature.

Beyond its striking form, the Elephant Rock holds remarkable archaeological significance: within it are two domus de Janas, rock-cut chamber tombs dating back to the Late Neolithic period (3200–2800 BC).

The name domus de Janas, which in Sardinian means “fairies’ houses”, stems from popular beliefs associated with these ancient tombs. Tradition tells that they were inhabited by small magical beings, akin to fairies, guardians of hidden treasures and of the mystery surrounding these places. Struck by the forms and the enigmatic aura of these cavities, popular imagination has, over the centuries, nourished tales and legends that still make them captivating today.

From an archaeological perspective, the Elephant Rock features an upper tomb, originally consisting of three small chambers, now partially damaged due to the collapse of the front section. This event, perhaps already during its original use, may have led to the creation of a second burial chamber in the lower part of the rock. Here four rooms remain, once preceded by a dromos (an open-air corridor). From the square entrance portal one enters the first chamber, whose side walls bear two carved reliefs of bovine protomes—symbols linked to fertility cults. Also visible are a stone-cut base and a decorative band engraved below the ceiling line. A second portal leads to the other chambers, likewise enriched with architectural motifs.

A visit to the Elephant Rock can be further enhanced by exploring the surrounding area, continuing on to the medieval centre of Castelsardo, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. From the majestic Doria Castle, now home to the Museum of Mediterranean Weaving, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view over the Gulf of Asinara.

Castelsardo: a journey through time on the Northern Sardinian coast

If you are planning a holiday in September at Hotel Relax Torreruja in Isola Rossa, don’t miss the chance to visit Castelsardo, a charming medieval village overlooking the Gulf of Asinara. With its narrow streets, ancient traditions, and spectacular views, Castelsardo is one of the most captivating places on the island. It’s a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that will captivate you at first sight.

A journey through time: Castelsardo and its past

Founded in 1270 by the Genoese Doria family, Castelsardo has a history that can be felt in every corner. For over 300 years, the village was under Spanish rule, becoming “Castelaragonese.” Today, its medieval charm remains intact, and from the top of the promontory where the ancient castle stands, it offers breathtaking views over the Gulf of Asinara and, on clear days, as far as Corsica.

The symbol of Castelsardo is the Doria Castle itself, built in the 13th century and still perfectly preserved. Walking along its walls feels like stepping back in time. You cannot miss the bell tower of the Cathedral of Sant’Antonio Abate, which rises majestically over the sea.

The craftsmanship of Castelsardo: a living heritage

The narrow streets of Castelsardo are not only rich in history but also in living traditions. The art of weaving is one of the village’s most precious crafts, with local women handcrafting beautiful baskets using natural materials such as reed, wheat, and dwarf palm. As you stroll through the streets, you might come across these artisans sitting at the doorsteps of their homes, weaving their masterpieces and sharing stories with curious visitors.

This ancient art has been passed down from generation to generation and is celebrated at the Museum of Mediterranean Weaving, located within the Doria Castle. Here, you can admire baskets not only from Castelsardo but from all around the Mediterranean area, discovering the uses and decorations that make each piece unique.

A dreamlike place recognised among the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy

At the edge of western Gallura, Castelsardo has been included in the circuit of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy, thanks to its scenic charm and rich history. Every corner of the village offers picturesque views that seem like windows onto the sea. Piazza Duomo, for example, is a true natural terrace overlooking the gulf, surrounded by historic buildings, boutiques, restaurants, and ice cream parlours that make the visit even more enjoyable.

If you are looking for a place that combines beauty, history, and tradition, Castelsardo is the perfect destination for you. A medieval gem nestled between the sky and the sea of Northern Sardinia, it will leave you with unforgettable memories.

Elephant Rock: one of the most iconic attractions of Northern Sardinia

And along the road leading to Castelsardo, don’t miss the famous Elephant Rock, a curious rock formation resembling a seated elephant. This large block of red trachyte, sculpted by wind and weather, is not only a perfect spot for photos but also houses the Domus de Janas, or the so-called fairy houses, ancient pre-Nuragic tombs that bear witness to Sardinia’s long history.

And for a refreshing dip before returning to your hotel, the large beach of Lu Bagnu is just two minutes by car from the historic centre, or you can opt for Marina di Castelsardo beach within the village, while Punta Li Paddimi has a mixed seabed of sand and rocks, ideal for snorkelling.

Li Cossi Beach – naturally captivating

A scenic footpath of around 500 metres leads to this gem of Costa Paradiso, a small seaside village just a few kilometres from Isola Rossa. Marked by wooden railings and winding through the fragrant Mediterranean scrub, the path opens up onto a sort of canyon carved by a small stream, and then to a beach of white sand tinged with pink and emerald waters. Sheltered by dramatic cliffs, it’s a stunningly atmospheric spot. The shallow waters make it ideal for children’s games, while those who love snorkelling will be amazed by the variety of marine flora and fauna that inhabit these waters.

Li Feruli – untamed

A different kind of landscape awaits at the start of the path to Li Feruli beach. As the final stretch of the Badesi coastline heading towards Isola Rossa, this long, wide expanse of pale, fine sand is bordered by dense Mediterranean vegetation with junipers and native plants. Sand dunes and vast open spaces define this wild haven, which remains quiet even in July and August – ideal for an afternoon of silence and rest.

Cala Sarraina – romantic

You’ll find this small cove just beyond Costa Paradiso, along the coastal road towards Santa Teresa Gallura. Cala Sarraina is a strip of sand framed by red rocks and aromatic Mediterranean plants, offering fiery, enchanting sunsets in the evening. Small paths meander along the cliffs leading to hidden corners and tiny coves where you can enjoy the sea in complete seclusion.

Lu Litarroni – idyllic

The beauty of this beach, found after the Vignola Mare shoreline (heading from Isola Rossa towards Palau), begins in the thick pine forest. A shady walk among the trees, accompanied by the constant chirping of cicadas, takes you to a stretch of fine sand and crystal-clear sea. With beach bars and sunbed rental available, it’s a favourite among locals for its striking view of Monti Russu, pristine waters, and shallow seabed that’s perfect for children.

Monti Russu – scenic

Also located along the northern coastal road from Isola Rossa to Santa Teresa Gallura, Monti Russu is one of the most scenic beaches in northern Sardinia and was named by Legambiente as one of the ten most beautiful in Italy. The turquoise crescent of sea backed by Monti Russu’s reddish rocks offers one of the area’s most iconic views. Countless trails weave through granite rocks and sparse vegetation, and on clear days you can even spot nearby Corsica.

From Isola Rossa to Li Feruli Beach along the Enchanting “Li Bicchi Rossi” Coasts

The journey to discover the Costa Rossa begins from its southwestern boundary, namely the fishing village of Isola Rossa, developed on the edge of Spiaggia Longa, near the Hotel Relax Torreruja Thalasso & SPA. A strip of white sand washed by clear, crystalline waters and equipped with all amenities, which for years has been awarded the Blue Flag by the FEE. It is precisely from this splendid beach that the first of our slow itineraries takes its start. The hike is easy and unfolds through fragrant Mediterranean scrubland, along the rough red cliffs of li Bicchi Rossi, until reaching the small, secluded beach of Oltu di Li Canni, shallow and rocky, and then the “Campanile”, a tall rock in the sea resembling the architectural structure of the same name. Beyond this little islet, you reach the beach of Li Feruli, the first in a long series of beaches stretching for no less than 8 kilometres. Once there, it is highly recommended to visit the Alburu di Li Banderi, a centuries‑old juniper tree symbolising those who died aboard the steamship Tripoli during the First World War.

From the Pastel Colours of La Marinedda to the Wild Red of Cala Canneddi

The second itinerary starts one kilometre from the village of Isola Rossa at La Marinedda beach, just a stone’s throw from the Hotel Marinedda Thalasso & SPA. The bay of La Marinedda is known for the turquoise shades of its waters and the intense scent of helichrysum filling the air. Surrounded by the green of the Mediterranean scrubland and the pale colours of sea roses and sea lilies, La Marinedda is the ideal destination for water-sports enthusiasts as well as families with young children. This is thanks to its shallow, sandy seabed and wide range of services, reasons behind its re‑confirmation as a Blue Flag beach in 2021.

On the northeastern side of La Marinedda begins a low red cliff, from where the slow journey starts along narrow paths through the greenery at the cliff’s edge and the splendid coves of Cala Calboni and Cala Falza, until reaching the rocky peninsula of Punta Li Canneddi. From this exceptional vantage point you can admire the island of Asinara and the characteristic village of Castelsardo to the west, as well as the distant, wild Corsica to the east.

The excursion ends at Li Canneddi beach, also known as Cala Rossa. Hidden behind the cliff of Punta Li Canneddi, Cala Rossa is characterised by transparent waters dotted here and there with small red rocks—a true fairy‑tale landscape. The shady pine wood behind it is ideal when you need a break from the sun to rest before heading off again.

From Cala Tinnari to Li Cossi Beach: Discovering the Crescents of the Costa Rossa

Wide, solitary landscapes and distinctive red cliffs plunging into the sea are the main attractions of this route, which begins halfway between Isola Rossa and Costa Paradiso. From the provincial road, turn in the direction of Monte Tinnari and follow a dirt track for a few kilometres until you reach a gate, where you can leave your car and begin the adventure on foot.

After a walk through cistus, mastic and helichrysum plants you suddenly become spectators of a unique spectacle: two silver‑pebble crescents joined by a rocky islet and emerald-green sea. This is the famous Cala Tinnari.

After a swim, you’re ready to plunge again into the dense Mediterranean scrubland, where the discoveries begin anew. A few steps from the cove you come across an ancient gallurese stazzo surrounded by the wild salsola of the beach and not far away a dense forest of Mediterranean scrub. Here, behind this evergreen barrier, you glimpse a new pleasant surprise: a splendid little beach of pink pebbles. This particularly secluded cove is called Porto Leccio because it was once surrounded by a holm oak forest.

But the journey doesn’t end here. A little further on, hidden by two towering red trachyte cliffs, appears the beach of Li Cossi—a crescent of golden sand, characterised by soft sandy seabeds and golden hues, another unmissable stop on the Costa Rossa. Li Cossi beach can also be reached via the panoramic path from Costa Paradiso, built on cliffs plunging into the sea and offering a natural spectacle of rare beauty. Romantic souls will appreciate walking this path at sunset; from here you can admire one of the most beautiful sunsets on the Costa Rossa!
